Good question, let me clarify.

During my experience with ego death, there was no connection with reality at all. This means no memories, no thoughts, no perception, I was completely a part of another world of information.

But there was still 'experience', otherwise I wouldn't remember that anything happened at all. Without experience, it would be like a coma, or I guess death from a atheist POV. Complete nothingness - non-existence.

The way I understand it is that consciousness is separable from human consciousness, and it's not dependent on a mind (imagine conscuousness as a product of the soul).

While consciousness is inhabiting a human body and mind, the nature of experience is bound to the infrastructure of the organism, which is what we're experiencing right now. But you can still experience consciousness without experiencing oneself, which is ego death.

So while there was 'experience', there were no ties to human experience, meaning the nature of experience was extremely foreign to anything we're familiar with (as we experience reality from a biological framework.

Regarding your question about moving back and forth, yes! I believe people who are highly skilled can voluntarily move into this state of consciousness, but it's not sustainable as during ego death your body is a lifeless vegetable, there is no driver in it. If your body is actually dead, then you have nowhere to return to.

With all that said, I think the only difference between death and ego death is that one of those experiences is temporary.

Hope that makes sense.
